Stakeholders Call for Greater Investment in TVET to Equip Ghana’s Youth with Job-Ready Skills

Stakeholders in Ghana’s Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) sector are calling for increased investment in practical skills development, modern training facilities, and entrepreneurship support to better prepare young people for employment and self-reliance.

The call comes as conversations around youth employability and skills development continue to gain momentum, with industry professionals and students stressing the need for reforms that better align technical education with the demands of today’s job market.

Speaking on the need to strengthen TVET, stakeholders noted that equipping technical institutions with modern, industry-standard tools and equipment would significantly improve hands-on learning and ensure graduates possess practical skills that meet industry needs. They also emphasised that competency-based education should become a stronger focus within technical training programmes to better prepare young people for employment.

Others called for greater support for graduates through workplace attachment opportunities, start-up assistance, and entrepreneurship training. They argued that integrating business management and digital skills into TVET programmes would empower more young people to establish their own businesses while creating employment opportunities for others.

Students also appealed for improved workshop facilities and increased practical training, urging educational authorities to place greater emphasis on field experience rather than classroom-based instruction alone. They believe stronger exposure to real working environments would help bridge the gap between education and industry expectations.

Stakeholders expressed confidence that sustained investment in TVET would contribute to Ghana’s industrialisation agenda, strengthen local manufacturing, and help address youth unemployment by producing a workforce equipped with relevant technical and entrepreneurial skills.
