Invest in Ghana’s Youth to Secure Lasting Prosperity – Aseidu Nketia

Jul 13, 2026

National Democratic Congress (NDC) Chairman Johnson Aseidu Nketia has called for increased national investment in Ghana’s young people, describing them as the country’s most valuable resource and the key to achieving sustainable economic growth.

In a message marking World Population Day, Aseidu Nketia emphasized that Ghana’s future prosperity depends not on its natural resources but on how well it develops the potential of its youthful population. He noted that with Ghana’s population projected to reach approximately 34.4 million in 2026, including an estimated 12.6 million young people between the ages of 15 and 35, the country possesses one of Africa’s strongest demographic advantages.

According to him, the nation’s youth should not be viewed as a burden but as innovators, entrepreneurs, farmers, engineers, teachers, creators, and future leaders capable of transforming Ghana’s economy.

“Our youth are not a challenge to manage; they are Ghana’s competitive advantage,” he stated.

The NDC Chairman stressed that the real challenge facing Ghana is whether enough is being invested in equipping young people with the knowledge, skills, and opportunities needed to thrive in an increasingly competitive global economy.

He therefore called for sustained investment in quality education, digital literacy, entrepreneurship, job creation, and leadership development. According to him, these sectors are essential to unlocking the country’s demographic dividend and ensuring inclusive national development.

Aseidu Nketia further argued that countries that prioritize youth development are better positioned to achieve long-term economic growth, innovation, and social stability. He urged policymakers, the private sector, development partners, and civil society organizations to work together in creating opportunities that empower young Ghanaians.

“As we commemorate World Population Day, let us remember that a nation that invests in its youth invests in lasting prosperity,” he said.

His remarks come at a time when youth employment, entrepreneurship, and skills development remain central to Ghana’s national development agenda. Analysts have consistently identified investment in human capital as a critical driver of economic transformation and improved living standards.

The call has renewed discussions on the importance of implementing policies that expand access to quality education, promote innovation, create decent employment opportunities, and equip young people with the digital and entrepreneurial skills required to compete in the modern economy.
